Keynote Session: Martha Blanding Moderated by Tim O'Day

Groundbreaking Magic, A Black Woman's Journey Through the Happiest Place on Earth

Disneyland, Walt Disney’s original theme park, opened in Orange County on July 17, 1955. Since then, over 650 million guests and Cast Members from around the world have visited and worked at “The Happiest Place on Earth.” One person who has positively impacted the experiences of many is Martha Blanding, the first Black American to retire after 50 years of service with The Walt Disney Company. Beginning as the first Black tour guide at Disneyland while a college student, Martha was later promoted to management, breaking many barriers while overseeing multi-million-dollar merchandise-based special events featuring globally acclaimed artists, authors, and celebrities. These included Thomas Kincade, Mickey Mantle, Kurt Russell, Annette Funicello, James Earl Jones, Marie Osmond, and Julie Andrews. After her retirement in 2022, Martha was named a Disney Legend in 2024, alongside Harrison Ford, Jamie Leigh Curtis, Miley Cyrus, Angela Bassett, and other notables.

Joining Martha to help share her inspirational story is Tim O’Day, an award-winning public relations executive, best-selling author, successful event producer, and recognized Disney historian. Tim's creative spark led to the installation of an Olympic-sized lap pool down Main Street USA at Disneyland for U.S. Olympian swimmers, procuring a Disneyland star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, placing “Dumbo” in the Smithsonian, and facilitating the retirement of the pardoned White House Thanksgiving turkeys to the Disney Parks (among the most successful PR stunts in Disney history). In addition to co-authoring Martha’s groundbreaking book “Groundbreaking Magic,” he is also the co-author of the best-selling coffee-table book “A Portrait of Walt Disney World: 50 Years of The Most Magical Place on Earth,” the most comprehensive history of the renowned resort destination. Tim currently appears on the Disney+ series “Behind the Attraction.”

The National Airspace System (NAS) is at a pivotal moment, facing the challenges of an aging air traffic control infrastructure and the opportunities presented by emerging technologies and evolving user needs. This panel convenes a cross section of industry leaders to examine the current state of the NAS and the key forces shaping its future. Discussion topics include the integration of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), the rise of commercial space operations, modernization of air traffic management, system capacity concerns, and the anticipated arrival of advanced air mobility (AAM). General Session B: JWA Noise & Access Program Overview and Land Use Encroachment

John Wayne Airport will present the most stringent noise and access program in the U.S. Nearly every community points to JWA as an example of what they would like, so it will be a great presentation to truly understand and be fully informed on this program. We will then change gears and discuss the land use encroachment many airports are experiencing that put in jeopardy their viability to continue operating an efficient and effective airport. Sacramento County Aviation Department will present how they have protected their airports from encroachment and Las Vegas may (not confirmed) discuss the issues they continue to face with land use around Harry Reid International Airport.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the JWA Noise & Access Program and better discuss with their communities why that is not an option available to most other airports
  • Understand the critical issues associated with land use encroachment around airports
  • Discuss with their airport management how to potentially protect from land use encroachment

The session will discuss the multiple generation currently in the workforce, for the first time in history there are five generations working together in workforce. Younger generations today are seeking a more work-life balance, prioritizing personal life over work (work to live) and how it may conflict with previous generation work culture (live to work). As the newer generation begins to grow in the work force, older generation must also learn how to navigate their demands.

We will address the obstacles and/or benefit each generation has experience when working with other generation workforce. Compare the younger generation and older generations work-life demand, and how and why it has changed.
